School’s Out!
How Teacher-Moms Can Recharge Over Summer Break
(Without Thinking About School 24/7)

From School Bells to Sunscreen: Resetting Your Summer as a Teacher-Mom

Ahhh…summer break. The final bell rings, the classroom lights go out, and just like that, it’s time to shift gears. As a teacher-mom, you’re probably torn between two worlds: basking in the relief of no lesson plans, and battling the urge to start prepping bulletin boards for fall. But this season is about you, too. Let’s talk about how to truly rest, recharge, and enjoy summer — without the guilt, the to-do list, or the “I should be planning” pressure.

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes… including you.”
— Anne Lamott

You’re Off Duty:
6 Ways to Actually Enjoy Summer

1. Give Yourself Permission to Pause

You don’t have to be productive right away. The first week of summer can be a buffer — a time to sleep in (if your kids let you), stay in pajamas until noon, and ignore the urge to alphabetize anything.

Treat yourself to a cozy lounge set or robe — something that says, “I’m officially off the clock.”

2. Create a Summer Rhythm (Not a Schedule)

Instead of rigid plans, think in terms of rhythms — like “slow mornings,” “outside time,” “creative afternoons,” or “quiet hour.” This gives structure without the stress.

Use a summer-themed planner or dry-erase board to jot down daily rhythms for the family.

3. Refresh Your Space for You

Now that your classroom is clean and packed up, turn your attention to your own space. Decluttering your bedroom, creating a calm reading nook, or just rearranging a few things can help your brain shift out of “teacher mode.”
Add peaceful vibes with a diffuser, candle, or fresh summer decor.

4. Rediscover Hobbies You Had to Pause

What did you love before grading papers and packing lunches? Whether it’s reading, crafting, baking, or walking with a podcast, bring back that joy.
A feel-good novel or guided journal makes a perfect naptime escape.

5. Recharge Without Scrolling

Sometimes we think we’re relaxing when we’re just numbing out. Choose activities that actually refuel you — even if it’s just 15 minutes of intentional quiet.
Try a short guided meditation or yoga session — this mat and app combo is a great start.

6. Set Boundaries on “Back-to-School” Brain

The Target school section will appear before July — don’t fall for it. You’re allowed to delay the prep. Instead, schedule one or two “work check-ins” in late summer so you’re not always low-key working.
Set up a “work bin” you can tuck away — out of sight, out of mind.

You’ve earned this break — not just as a teacher, but as a mom who’s been running on fumes for months.
Take the time to restore your energy, your joy, and your peace.
Because a recharged
you is the best gift you can give to your kids —
and your future students.
